Floral Naked Cake

I have been eyeing the Naked Cake trend for some time now… they are so pretty and simple, but make a huge statement at any dessert table! So when my grandmother’s birthday came around last week, I took it as the perfect opportunity to hop on board the trend and test one out for myself. {For those of you wondering what a ‘naked cake’ is… it is the latest cake trend where you skip frosting the outside of the cake, but rather focus between layers, and then go over-the-top in decorating the top layer. The top layer can be fruit, flowers, icing, the works; see this cute post with so many inspiring Naked Cake ideas on SMP Living.}.

I knew right away that I wanted mine to be a floral cake because my grandmother loves peonies, so I headed to a local flower shop here in Miami and found the most gorgeous pink peonies and mixed with a few roses and a small stem of babys breath. The key to utilizing live flowers on a cake is to wrap the stems with floral tape so that you cover the stem completely {in this YouTube video there is a great visual at time 1:30}. I have also seen examples {ie. here} of placing the flower stems on baking paper and covering with frosting to conceal. But if you are worried, you can always buy edible flowers at somewhere like Whole Foods!

For my cake, I went with a classic vanilla cake and whipped up this home-made delish buttercream frosting. The end product – a show stopping cake for guests! I recommend swapping this for store bought cupcakes and cakes for your next bridal shower, birthday party, or girls night! Hope you enjoy this sweet step by step photo recap of how I put it together!
