Looking for a fun Halloween DIY todo with the little ones? I found this adorable idea on onlineย and thought it would be a great activity todo with my kids over Halloween weekend. These cookies are perfect to bring to a friend’s Halloween party or the perfect spooky dessert for your Halloween dessert buffet!
I do have to laugh because the whole point of the “TastesBetterfromScratch”ย blog {where I found the recipe} is to actually make the cookies from scratch, but this busy mamma decided to take the shortcut with slice and bake sugar cookies, and they still came out amazing. {And I had taste-testers to attest!}. The key to creating the spiders is to bake your cookies a portion of the way through {about 10 minutes}, then add the three chocolate chips {the body of the spider}, and then complete baking. Once they are baked, allow enough time to cool before adding your “legs”. Find the full made-from-scratch recipe below!
Ingredients:
- 2ย cupsย plus 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- ยฝย tspย baking soda
- ยฝย tspย salt
- 12ย Tbspย butterย , melted and cooled until warm
- 1ย cupย brown sugar
- ยฝย cupย granulated sugar
- 1ย large egg + 1 egg yolk
- 2ย tspย vanilla extract
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions:
- Heat oven to 325 degrees F.
- In a medium bowl mix together flour, salt, and baking soda..
- In a separate large mixing bowl beat the butter and sugars together with an electric mixer until well blended. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. Stir in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. The dough will be soft.
- Gently scoop dough into balls and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and place 3 chocolate chips into the tops of each cookie, point side up. Allow cookies to cool before next step!
- Add remaining chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and microwave, on low power, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted. Just barely cut the corner off of a small ziplock bag (you want the hole to be very small to make your spider legs). Spoon the melted chocolate into the bag and use it draw spider legs on the sides of the chocolate chips. Or for an easier method get an icing pen!
- Serve!
Happy Halloween!
